How We Grow
Ethical. Local. Sustainable.
Baywater Farms is here today thanks to the passion, care, and responsible farming techniques of our ancestors who sowed seeds on the same land six generations ago. We respect the legacy of our great-grandparents and only use farming techniques that are ethical and sustainable, as we want our farm to feed another six generations of Maryland residents. We sow our seeds by hand, tend to our crops each day, and harvest them at the peak of perfection. Our farming isn’t about us, it’s about the stars of the show—our delicious, nutritious, non-GMO, responsibly grown produce.
Our Hydroponics
At Baywater Farms, we have a ½ acre greenhouse that is packed full of 24 acres’ worth of fresh Maryland produce. Our greenhouse is climate-controlled and constantly monitored by farmers, so our hydroponically-grown lettuces, herbs, and microgreens are available every day of the year. Our hydroponics are just as fresh and crisp in January as they are in June, and we are constantly sowing and harvesting to get food from our farm to your table in hours instead of days.
Hydroponic growing methods might use modern technology to get the job done, but they have roots in centuries of farmers before us. Hydroponic farming eliminates the need for pesticides and herbicides thanks to the controlled greenhouse environment. Since produce is harvested with the small roots still attached, our hydroponic produce stays fresh longer than traditionally-harvested produce. Hydroponic farming uses an amazing 10-15% of the water typically required for farming in a field, making it an ecologically-friendly farming method that shows the earth some love.
Our Heirloom Field Crops
In addition to our ½-acre hydroponic greenhouse, we also are surrounded by fields filled with the same soil that our great-grandparents tilled. On our farm, all of our, heirloom, and local produce is grown using high-quality seeds that are sown by hand. We give our heirloom plants attention throughout the growing process to get the most deliciously beautiful final product possible. As a sustainable farm, and as Baywater Farms, a family-owned and operated business, we are dedicated to preserving and reviving historical crops and putting food on the tables of families throughout the Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. area.
Our farming practices give back to the earth some of what we take from it throughout the farming process, like nutrients and nourishing food. Baywater Farms uses sustainable farming methods because they create produce the way it was meant to be enjoyed. As a family owned produce farm, we take pride in harvesting fresh produce, cultivating healthy soil on our farm, encouraging biodiversity, supporting the welfare of local wildlife populations, and growing something that feeds people every day.
