What Does Non-GMO Mean?

Come learn about non-gmo foods, and our new merch store!

The rise of the organic movement when it comes to food means that the phrase “non-GMO” has become somewhat prominent as well. For distributors in Baltimore and beyond, capitalizing on the rise of non-GMO foods has become an excellent way to increase their profits and positive customer relations. But what exactly does non-GMO mean, and how can distributors tell the difference? Let’s find out.

The Meaning of Non-GMO

Plain and simple, non-GMO refers to non-genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Unfortunately, GMOs are artificial creations, created through genetic engineering in a lab rather than allowed to grow naturally from the Earth. At Baywater Farms, we believe that GMOs aren’t the way to go or the best way to serve our Baltimore customers. Any foods that have GMO ingredients have already been as carrying numerous health risks.

How Does Genetic Modification Work?

Crops are one of the most important foodstuffs we have and can farm responsibly. However well-intentioned the concept of GMO foods are, the reality is that allowing food to remain non-GMO will keep everyone safer and healthier. For the genetic modification to work scientists harvest the genes of one organism and add it to the plant or crop that they are modifying. The idea behind this procedure is to make crops more resistant to insect attacks and other such dangers. GMO corn, for instance, would be able to create its own defenses against insects in a way that non-GMO corn wouldn’t.

Some Common GMO Crops

  • Corn
  • Soybeans
  • Zucchini
  • Alfafa
  • Cotton
  • Canola

What are some GMO Products Commonly Sold?

A large percentage of the products (70%) stores and restaurants carry are processed foods, and are a far cry from fresh and organic local produce. More than 60 countries worldwide, such as Australia, Japan, and the countries of the European Union require GMO foods to be labeled, but the same cannot be said for the United States and Canada. So, what are some commonly sold GMO products that have no place in non-GMO foods?

  • Hydrolyzed vegetable protein corn syrup
  • Amino acids
  • Aspartame
  • High-fructose corn syrup
  • Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
