The Maryland Fish Pepper
The Maryland fish pepper first came to the area that would make it famous in the 1870s. However, this pepper first came from the Caribbean. Baltimore and Philadelphia became the two many hubs for the distribution and popularization of this chili pepper, but because it became so widely-loved around the Chesapeake Bay, the name of “Maryland fish pepper” is what stuck. Times changed, though, and by the 1940s, the fish pepper was nearly forgotten about until it was rescued by two Pennsylvanians, a farmer and his neighbor, who traded seeds for honey. Ultimately, we found the seeds and helped bring the Maryland fish pepper back from the edge of oblivion – after they were first returned to the market in 1995.

Along with our wide variety of other heirloom field crops, you can find our version of the Maryland fish pepper in the big-name grocery stores all over the country, as well as from produce distributors and small farm stands you find alongside the roads as you travel through Maryland. They can also be found in specialty restaurants, community-supported agriculture organizations, and farmers markets, which are growing in popularity as well.
